For two hundred years the Hold has fallen through the dark between the stars, and for two hundred years its people have kept the faith that keeps them breathing: tend the Loop, sing the rite, pay the debt of every borrowed breath. The clean air rises to the favored wards near the light; the used air sinks to the Lees, where the poor cough out lives spent paying down an inheritance of shame.

Renna has done everything right. A Keeper’s daughter, marked for the holy work, she can sing the Lending more perfectly than anyone alive — and she has never once felt the warmth it gives everyone around her. There is a sour note in her she cannot name, a wrongness with no wound, and she has spent her whole life certain it is a flaw in her alone.

Then she crosses the one line her world forbids. In the sealed deep records — written in a hand no one living can read — Renna begins, one stolen word at a time, to teach herself the founders’ lost language. What she finds there is not the mystery she was promised but something far more dangerous: the truth the whole Keeping was built to bury, and a voice two centuries dead that turns out to know her better than anyone living ever has.

To carry that truth up into the light will cost her the work, the belonging, the mother she loves, and everything she has spent her life climbing toward. What she does with it will decide whether the Hold can survive being seen — and whether a truth worth everything is worth the telling at all.
