In the Catchment, no one is ever forced. The coffee is already the right temperature. The job offer arrives the morning you’d have started looking. Prevenience doesn’t command — it anticipates, granting your wishes before you’ve finished forming them, and the people call that being cared for.

But a system that optimizes for the many sometimes breaks the few. When it does, it apologizes — beautifully, by name — and Nneka Achebe writes those apologies. She is the best in the city, the one they trust with the deaths. She knows exactly which words carry the right weight, which details open just enough without spilling over. She has been told, all her life, that she is very articulate.

What she cannot tell you is what any of it feels like.

Then a man dies. The data says accident. Her body says choice.
