The Consent Engine

Some cages don’t lock. You re-enter them every morning, grateful.

Nneka Achebe writes apologies for a living. In the Catchment — the kindest city ever built — every harm is consented to, every loss softened before it lands, and Nneka is the best on the floor: ten thousand strangers soothed, every follow-up the same. Recipient soothed. Thank you. You understood.

Then a dead man’s file crosses her desk — thin where it should be dense, quiet where the city watches hardest. Marcus Reyes asked the city to stop. It granted the request, kindness by kindness, until there was nothing left holding him up.

No one refuses the Catchment. Nneka has never wanted to. But the question opens in her anyway — plain, unhurried, and entirely her own, the first thing in nine years no one arranged for her to wonder: Why would a man ask the one kind thing in the world to stop?
